In the 49th match of IPL 2020 held at Dubai between CSK and KKR we just did not see a nail biting finish but some extremely good performances in the match. With CSK winning the toss and choosing to field first, we were in for a very competitive game yesterday. With CSK having nothing to lose, they were playing fearless cricket. KKR on the other hand was playing to get those two points to be in the run for the playoffs.

KKR performed really well in the batting with Nitish Rana scoring 87 runs in 61 balls and Shubman Gill scoring 26 runs in 17 balls and opening the game with determination and power. With a little unsteady performance in the middle which has been an issue for KKR, we also saw Dinesh Karthik comeback better than before and scoring 21 runs in 10 balls. In total the KKR batting unit scored 172 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 5 wickets. The CSK bowling unit was doing really well by picking up those important wickets and restricting the batsman from scoring big. Lungi Ngidi back in the squad for CSK, picked up two wickets in four overs. Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja and Kran Sharma also picked up one wicket each during their bowling spell.

CSK was comparatively steady with their batting unit with Ruturaj Gaikwad opening the batting and creating pressure on the bowling unit. However Shane Watson lost his wicket early in the game. With Ambati Rayudu and Ruturaj Gaikwad building a steady partnership we saw KKR feeling the pressure. Rituraj scored his second IPL fifty as he scored 72 runs and 53 balls in this game. He has been performing well as an opener in the past two games. After Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad losing their wickets, fans almost thought the game has gone in KKR’s favour but Ravindra Jadeja with his knock of 31 in 11 balls turn the game in the last few overs.

It was a nail biting finish with Kamlesh Nagarkoti bowling last over and keeping the scores tight till the second last ball. We saw the youngster bowling some good balls but Jadeja on the other end picked up and finished the game in style. Jadeja’s knock was crucial as it helped CSK seal the game with win.

The game was all about determination and execution. The pressure pendulum kept swinging to both ends throughout the game. This reminded me of how we feel the pressure and sometimes we are on the top of our abilities which create pressure on someone else. These kind of pressure is healthy because it pushes you to perform better and step up your game. In life it’s not always about winning but you have to constantly keep trying and improving yourself. When it comes to competitions in life there will always be one winner but if you are not the winner you are still a learner and you can learn something from your loss and change the same next time.

We are often left with the question that if things don’t work out our way in spite of working day in and out is it worth our time? Is it worth giving so much time and energy knowing that it’s not going to help us in achieving our goal of winning?

I would say yes. It is worth the time because winning is not where the goal is achieved in life. Winning is just a one step ahead towards the larger goal of being the best in your respective field. Sometimes we do engage in thinking that it’s not worth the time if our efforts are not helping us to get the results in our favour. We have to understand that having a rigid mindset that if I don’t get this I am not going to try again because I am not worth it or the thing is not what my efforts does not really foster a positive approach in your preparation. How do we have a positive approach then?

If you have observed in the game, both the teams have faced some real difficult loss and have been through losing matches with very close margins. You must have also heard them say that it is what the game offers. Exactly how our life is. Sometimes, you are extremely close to your achievement but you did not achieve that. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try the goal seems far from being achieved. If you have experienced this kind of situations, having a growth mindset helps in preparing for the next challenge.

If an individual has a growth mindset, they see these kind of results as a challenge and learn from these losses. They embrace failures, learn from them and make the required changes in their approach in order to perform to their best ability and push themselves to do better. We saw that both the teams have embraced failures, learnt from it and have change their approach in order to find the correct combination of hard work and smart work. If we do the same in our life, we may also be able to do things that we thought we could not and achieve the goals.

Key takeaways from this match:

  1. The way you prepare yourself, manage the external stress and believe in your abilities, you will be able to perform under any situation.
  2. Having a mindset that is focused on growth helps you in taking criticism positively, embracing your failures, seeing situations as a challenge, and pushing your own potentials.
  3. Everyone has the capability to perform well, the only difference is on how you prepare yourself for it and perform at the given moment.
