Sri Lanka’s bowling department did a good job by taking 2 important wickets in PP. Compared to their first ODI, Sri Lanka batting unit performed a bit better in the powerplay innings by score 59 runs at a loss of 0 wickets compared to 55-1 in the last game, setting the stage for a big score. In comparison, SL dominated the powerplay stage in the 2nd ODI.

In overs 11 to 40, Sri Lanka was slightly ahead of India again. In the overs 11 to 40, India lost 5 important wickets but the run rate was under control mainly due to Suryakumar Yadav’s innings.

Death overs however was a concern for SL’s batting as in that phase they lost the momentum by losing more wickets and batting at an avg of 22.6. On the other hand, India didn’t  lose any wicket in the last 10 overs thanks to Chahar’s innings!

In comparison, there was a bit different approach from SL in both the departments leading to a thrilling end to the game.

Powerplay Comparison
Sri Lanka v India

There was not much of a difference in the scoring rate for both the teams in the first 10 overs. India’s scoring rate was 6 and Sri Lanka’s scoring rate was 5.9. The only difference that needs to be noted was India lost 2 wickets in the powerplay whereas Sri Lanka seemed to have sailed through it without much damage to their batting line up. Picking up wickets in powerplay would be an area to work on for India in order to restrict the opponent to decent totals.

Also India was seen to be slightly ahead of Sri Lanka in PP2 mainly because of Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav’s partnership. In this phase, India lost 5 wickets totaling to losing 7 wickets by the 40th over. Sri Lanka may have scored at a 4.5 scoring rate but their bowling department made sure that wickets were picked time to time and the game was still in their favor.

SL may need to work up their ways to avoid a collapse in the middle overs and up the scoring rate i.e. continue after the good starts and put a big total on board.

Comparison of first 10 and last 10 overs

Sri Lanka scored at 5.9 RPO in the first 10 overs, which is a bit higher than the 1st match and they didn’t lose any wicket.  However, they lost 3 wickets and scored at 8.0 RPO in the last 10 overs which is also a bit higher when compared to 1st ODI.

India scored at 6 runs per over and lost 2 important wickets in the first 10 overs. They however, managed to score 68 runs at  7.4 runs per over in the death overs and didn’t lose any wicket which ensured that they win the game and seal the series with a win.

Capitalizing on the momentum of the good start and not losing much wickets in middle overs, accelerating in the death overs will be something that both teams need to do consistently in order to win games/ put big total on board for the chasing team!

Special Mentions
