By Urvi and Ekantika

The Dream 11 IPL FINAL between MI and DC was held yesterday at Dubai. It was the most awaited Finals with Mumbai and Delhi fighting it out for the last time to win the championship. Mumbai was looking for its consecutive win and DC was looking for its maiden win. DC made it to the finals for the first time and created a history with their performance in this tournament for their franchise.

DC won the toss and elected to bat first. The top guns of DC did not fire well but, Captain Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant built crucial 96 runs partnership and kept the scoreboard running. MI bowling unit restricted the Delhi Capitals to 156 runs at the end of first innings. Captain Rohit Sharma lead the team closer to the target score with his 68 runs. Ishan Kishan and Pollard lead the team to victory with their performances while Krunal Pandya scored the winning run. It was an overall team performance that led them to clinching the title for the 5th time.

While the finale was about winning the championship, MI’s performance throughout the season has been dominant and we saw their best foot forward each time. DC’s performance has been highly inspiring and their journey has shown us what it is to be resilient, passionate and not give up at any point no matter how things are going for you. The entire tournament was about which team achieves its goal of winning the title.

As we are aware, humans are goal oriented individuals. The experiences they face during their pathway sets the tone on how determined they are about their goals. As individuals, whenever we set a goal there are various factors which comes into play, such as, dealing stressful situations; developing skills and working on existing skills along with the experiences of winning and losing. In our previous blogs, we spoke about how self-determination plays an important role when it comes to winning. This is because, self-determination is one of the aspects that influences an individual to become goal oriented. When an individual is determined to complete a given task, they are auto-tuned to feel motivated from within, that is, internal motivation. When intrinsically motivated, individuals are completely self- regulated, highly engaged in activities, they experience small successes and failures, and they perform with or without external motivating factors.

If we see Mumbai Indians’ performance throughout the IPL, we see glimpse of everything in that team. Their performance was goal-oriented (win the trophy) and their motivation to achieve it was higher. When a team/individual is goal-oriented, they are focused on completing the smaller tasks that can help them achieve their goal. Professionals who are successful in their fields often goal-oriented. They practice different skills which allows them to set realistic goals for themselves, challenge and attain simple objectives and also track their progress.

When we talk about competitions and how to perform better each time we step out on the field, we are looking at different factors in a team as well as in the individuals. While determination, passion, intent, grit, etc plays a role, it is important to understand on how to channelize it to attain success and maintain a good performance each time. While these factors influence the individual’s performance, it is important to have a goal and the motivation to attain it.

How to form goals that are achievable and also help us in performing better?

It is often seen that individuals or groups (teams) who perform better consistently are often aiming at the same objective, and have formed S.M.A.R.T goals.

What are S.M.A.R.T. goals?

S= Specific (Make your goals very specific so that it helps in planning your way to achieve it. Vague goals eg. I want to be a cricketer, won’t help you in setting a plan as much as “I want to be a cricketer who is known for his/her bowling and play for my country”)

M= Measurable (Define the factors that will help you understand your progress and check how far you have come)

A= Attainable (Setting attainable (achievable) goals helps in understanding whether you can achieve that goal now or you need to add some more skills and try after sometime)

R= Relevant (As you set your goals, ask if you achieve that how will it help you in your larger objective (here: playing for the country). If it doesn’t help you in reaching your goals or doesn’t contribute towards your larger goal in life, you may want to rethink your current goal)

T= Time-Based (What is the time frame you are setting to attain your goals? Having a set time frame helps in being motivated to achieve it)

When we set small, specific goals for the larger objective, we will find it easier to plan our way through it, make better decisions, be motivated on each stage, be optimistic and analyse our performance.

As we come to an end of the tournament, we would summarise our learnings from the entire season. Some of the key take-aways from this tournament for all of us was:

  1. Being determined
  2. Setting achievable goals
  3. Being resilient helps in coming back stronger
  4. Don’t give up
  5. Failures are a part of life, embrace them and move ahead
  6. We will succeed if we focus on the process more
  7. Success and failure both make us who we are.
  8. If we are determined to win and prepare each day with the commitment to win, we will make it happen.
  9. We can create history.
  10. We have to work through and regulate our emotions and thoughts to perform better and with composure under pressure.
