The 45th match of IPL was held at Abu Dabi on 25/10/2020 between RR and MI. MI won the toss and chose to bat. Pollard was pretty confident about the performance, as they have been winning games consistently. Even though, MI batting line was seen to be crumbling down between 90-2 to 101-4, they set up a competitive score for RR.

In the first half of the match, we saw Quinton de Kock lose his wicket early on post which Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan played pretty well and set a foundation for their partnership. Kishan got out to Kartik Tyagi’s ball after scoring 37 runs in 36 balls. But, we also witnessed Jofra Archer’s extraordinary catch! Soon after that, we saw the dismissal of other batsmen within a short period of time. We saw a great performance of Suryakumar Yadav (40 runs in 26 balls); and Saurabh Tiwary (34 runs in 25 balls). Hardik Pandya ( 60* runs in 21 balls) played exceptionally well and helped MI to set a target of 196 runs for RR. RR’s bowling line up was seen to be very much aligned with their performance. Apart from his extraordinary catch, Archer also contributed to taking wickets (4-31-2). Kartik Tyagi (4-45-1) and Shreyas Gopal  (4-30-2) did their part really well too. We cannot not mention the last few overs played by Hardik Pandy! It had been a long time since we saw him play his best knock!!

In the second half of the match, RR lost two wickets in the powerplay. We witnessed Ben Stokes’s outstanding performance (107* runs in 60 balls) which helped RR to win the game. Ben Stokes was supported by Sanju Samson (54*runs in 31 balls). It seemed that MI bowlers were unable to stop the big hitters from scoring runs. James Pattinson (3.2-40-2) took wickets in the powerplay. It was seen that Ben Stokes had made up his mind to give us ultra best and promote RR in the points table. Phew! what a performance by both the teams in the first half it was Hardik Pandya and in the second half, it was Ben Stokes.

In our lives, we come across motivation indications that push to work towards our goals. There are two types of motivation – extrinsic (external) motivation which gives us a reason to reach our goal (medals, trophies, opportunities etc) and another one intrinsic (internal) motivation which helps us to push ourselves higher and above (personal desires, satisfaction after performing a certain skill to our best, etc). The impact of intrinsic motivation and self-determination was observed in yesterday’s match. How can this help to achieve our goal?

It is quite obvious how intrinsic motivation is a much more impactful driver when it comes to the attainment of goals. When people who are more focused upon external motivation than internal motivation more likely to struggle in their goal-orientation. For example, individuals who are highly motivated in making money than learning areas in the field will have difficulty to be a part of the team. External motivation cannot fulfill one’s satisfaction in their performance. Whereas, people who have a high level of intrinsic motivation are likely adhere to their tasks and enter the state of flow (being completely involved in an activity for its own sake.) In the post-match interview, Ben Strokes mentioned that: “Outside noise doesn’t matter to me anymore. The only things which matter to me are the feedbacks from those who value me and who are close to me.” When an individual is determined to achieve what they want, their intrinsic motivation takes an upper hand to help them to reach the destination.

When an individual is highly determined, they will focus on building their competencies which help will them to reach his goal. Building and grooming your competencies helps in measuring your own abilities. By doing so, it also helps you accept feedbacks from your near and dear ones. Positive feedback helps boost self-determination. Unexpected positive encouragement from people can also increase intrinsic motivation.

People who are high on intrinsic motivation will not really get affected by extrinsic motivation. In fact, they would find this external motivation as a cherry on the cake! On the other hand, people who only focus on extrinsic motivation tend to have lower self-determination. This happens because external motivation provides short term happiness.  People who are high on intrinsic motivation and self-determination can perform well in stressful situations hecause the only focus here is to reach the goal.

Key takeaway points from this match:

  1. Motivation (extrinsic and intrinsic) plays a role in dealing with stressful situations.
  2. Determination gives us an opportunity to test our abilities and better our abilities too.
  3. Motivation and determination to perform better and win, will help you to achieve success.
